IL Attorney General files suit against towing company

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan has filed suit against a Jackson County towing company.

Rich's Towing and its owners, Richard and Linda Holmes, are accused of illegal dumping.

Attorney General Madigan says inspections by the Illinois Environmental Protection Agency (IEPA) revealed approximately 7,750 cubic yards of stored or abandoned waste at facilities on Airport Road and U.S. Highway 51. The waste included used tires, vehicles, old mobile homes and construction debris.

"With the filing of this lawsuit, we're working to ensure that this business will be held accountable for the damage caused to the local environment," Madigan said.

In the lawsuit, Madigan seeks a $50,000 civil penalty for each violation and $10,000 for each day the violations continued. Madigan is also asking the court to issue an injunction requiring Holmes to clean up the area.
