Illinois' Attorney General says nearly 20 percent of the orders of protection filed in the state are not served. The order is meant to protect victims of domestic violence. But if the order isn't served, law enforcement cannot arrest an abuser who violates the terms.
Attorney General Lisa Madigan says state law enforcement and other agencies at the county level are working to close the gap.
<MADIGAN>: "There's been a need for us to really determine why it is that orders have not been served. And often times what we have found are somethings that think are very simple things. People who are right under law enforcements' noses who we should be able to serve."
Madigan says her office found hundreds of unserved orders were for inmates and parolees. She says in other cases orders were served but never recorded with the courts.
